About
Kim Kieser is restoring the urban river systems in South Africa. Urban river systems in South Africa are heavily polluted as a result of effluent from industry and homes. River sections that run beside poverty-riddled communities are especially dirty. Kim observed that river pollution was higher along poor communities for several reasons. First, irregular payment for city services produced irregular collection of waste. Second, in informal settlements that do not receive state sponsored social services such as waste collection, available open spaces become dump sites. Kim has developed a clean up model to tackle these problems. Her model actively engages communities in all aspects necessary for clean river management, lobbies for an enabling legislative framework, and is underpinned by a series of socio-economic sustainability strategies. Through her work, Kim is improving the lives of South Africans through clean water, clean green areas, and increasing employment.
